About Us

Peter is the Principal Consultant, leading operations in New Zealand. He has extensive construction and regulatory industry experience, initially a carpenter in the New Zealand Army (Royal New Zealand Engineers) and has worked in local and central government. Peter has considerable central government experience having undertaken policy and regulatory reviews for the Building Industry Authority, Department of Building and Housing, and the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE). He was also the General Manager of Consenting and Compliance at Christchurch City Council in response to the Canterbury earthquakes, then returned to Wellington as a Director for MBIE. He also consulted to the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet in response to the Kaikoura earthquake.

An avid champion of education, Peter spent almost 6 years developing and lecturing on NZQA approved building surveying qualifications including at certificate, diploma and degree level. Peter also provides expert witness services to law firms around New Zealand and is currently the Vice President of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ)

Mario is our senior building consultant. A highly experienced carpenter with over 40 years in the trade, many of which he has spent working as a sole trader. As a Licensed Building Practitioner in both Carpentry and Site 2, Mario has delivered a wide range of residential projects — from group housing developments to high-end architectural new builds and complex alterations.

Following the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010/11, Mario spent 13 years contracting to the Earthquake Commission, initially as an Estimator and later as a Technical Specialist. In these roles he was instrumental in the assessment and repair of hundreds of homes, working closely with engineers and contractors to ensure accurate and effective repair strategies.

Mario has also focused on providing pre-purchase and pre-sale property reports. He holds a Certificate in Forensic Building Surveying through the New Zealand Institute of Building Surveyors, further strengthening his expertise in building diagnostics and reporting.

Harry is an approachable and confident Registered Building Surveyor and Quantity Surveyor with extensive experience in building maintenance, defect investigation, and refurbishment scope development. He has strong technical expertise in building construction, forensic investigation, Building Code compliance, and defect identification, producing clear and practical reports for residential, apartment, education, and commercial properties.

In 2023, Harry returned to Maynard Marks after eight years as Principal Technical Advisor with MBIE’s Weathertight Homes Resolution Service, where he assessed remediation designs to ensure defects were effectively addressed, cost-efficiently and in compliance with the Building Code.

Throughout his career, Harry has undertaken Condition Surveys, Defect Investigations, Certificates of Acceptance, and Ministry of Education 10 Year Property Plan Surveys. He also has extensive Quantity Surveying experience across local government, contracting, and consultancy.

Lei is a qualified and experienced carpenter with a strong background in residential projects, including remedial work, high-end alterations, and new builds.

Since 2022, Lei has broadened his expertise into the insurance sector as a property loss adjuster, managing numerous severe weather event claims following the Auckland Anniversary floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. He specialises in complex water and fire damage assessments.

With a unique combination of hands-on carpentry skills and insurance knowledge, Lei is committed to providing detailed reinstatement advice and practical support to clients recovering from significant property loss.

Andrew Buchanan is a registered Architect with over 20 years’ experience across a diverse range of built environment projects. His career includes experience with Architectus, Brewer Davidson, Archimedia and WSP.

Andrew has expertise across all stages of design and project delivery, from master planning through to construction. He takes a practical, problem-solving approach, balancing design, regulatory, functional and commercial requirements to achieve effective project outcomes.

Andrew now focuses on projects involving the repair and restoration of damaged buildings, helping return them to functional and purposeful spaces for their occupants.

A Quantity Surveying graduate with a background in Systems IT, project management, construction, and administration. With over 10 years of experience in IT and a Diploma in Systems Technology she brings strong technical, organisational and problem-solving skills.

Puna enjoys improving processes, taking on new challenges, and contributing beyond her role. In her spare time, she volunteers with the Te Ararata Stream Team, runs an Engineering, Surveying and Construction Club at Unitec and mentors’ students.

Puna values continuous learning, community involvement and working with purpose.

Stephen is the director of ASURNZ, leading operations across Australia and New Zealand.

Stephen provides various consultancy and expert witness services for the construction sector in Australia and New Zealand.

With nearly 40 years’ experience in the construction industry, over time he has developed expert technical knowledge of building and construction practices with an emphasis on compliance and regulatory matters. He has held senior and national roles in major companies in the industry, including at Carters, CHH Woodproducts, Mainzeal Property & Construction and CSR Building Products. He has also provided authorship to several NZ and Australian Standards including: NZS 3604 Timber-framed buildings; NZS 3602; NZS 3640; AS 5146; and AS 2753. 

Stephen is a Director of the NZ Building Industry Federation, has served on the Building Research Advisory Council for BRANZ, and is a past Chair of the NZ Frame and Truss Manufacturers Association.
